Devon’s Most Haunted
Halloween is on the horizon and what better time to scare yourself silly than with a trip to Torbay where there’s some seriously spooky days out for all the family this Autumn. Read on, if you dare, to discover what tricks and treats lie in store over October Half Term right here on the English Riviera with our guide to Devon’s most haunted locations…
Devon’s Most Haunted 1 – Berry Pomeroy
If you love a good ghost story, head along to Berry Pomeroy Castle which lies not far from Beverley Holidays and is one of the most haunted places in the British Isles. The once-majestic castle was built in the 15th century by the Pomeroy family but was abandoned for many years, with its romantic ruins rumoured to harbour hauntings and eerie apparitions. Take a tour and you may well stumble across the spooky sighting of two female ghosts that are said to have made the castle their home – the White Lady and Blue Lady.
Devon’s Most Haunted 2 – Torre Abbey Historic House & Gardens
Originally founded as a Monastery in 1196, Torre Abbey is Torquay’s oldest building and has certainly played its part in history. Having witnessed and survived many epic moments from days gone by, including world wars to religious rebellions, there’s little wonder why it has acquired some spooky residents along the way. Its’ beautiful Spanish Barn for example is said to be home to ‘The Spanish Lady’ who according to local legend roams the barn in search of her lost love.
Devon’s Most Haunted 3 – Torquay Museum
A great wet-weather attraction, Torquay Museum not only boasts ever-changing exhibitions about South Devon’s archaeology, geology and people, but it’s also a strong contender for the title of Devon’s most haunted. The Victorian Museum has experienced its fair share of paranormal goings-on including fingerprints that were discovered on the inside of a mummy case that hadn’t been opened in years and a 300-year-old crib that rocked on its own. Be brave and head along for a chance to get up close to its spooky residents while also learning about Beverley’s hometown of Torbay.
Devon’s Most Haunted 4 – Dartmoor National Park
Slightly less close to Beverley Holidays but well worth the drive, Dartmoor National Park is one of the last great wildernesses in the UK – a perfect breeding ground for ghosts and ghouls. Home to lush forests, winding rivers and everything from headless horses to its most famous resident, ‘The Hairy Hand’, you’d be hard pushed to find a Devon landscape so littered in ghostly legends. Leave the bright lights of Torbay behind for a day trip to Dartmoor and there’s no doubt you’ll be bewitched by its rich history, rare wildlife and beautiful rolling moorland.
